December 19, 2019– (Lawndale, CA) Mark Twain Elementary School is among the best in California, according to the state superintendent of schools.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond announced that 323 elementary schools are being honored under the 2020 California Distinguished Schools Award Program. The program recognizes schools that are awarded for closing the achievement gap among student groups and for “exceptional” student performance.

“These outstanding schools don’t just educate students; they also provide the young people of California the tools they need to be successful after graduation,” Thurmond is quoted as saying in a news release issued by his office. “Thanks go to all the staff at these schools — teachers, administrators, classified employees — and parents, who are working together to provide high-quality educational experiences for all of their students.”

Schools are evaluated on test scores, suspension rates, and conditions and school-climate ratings.

“We are very proud of the outstanding academic achievement and culture of collaboration that Mark Twain Elementary School has exhibited as a California Distinguished School,” states Thelma Gonzalez, Principal at Mark Twain Elementary. “Thank you to the teachers, administrators and staff, as well as the parents and community members, who support our school. This accomplishment would not have been possible without you.”

The schools recognized will be honored at an awards ceremony at Disneyland in February.
